This year, I wrote 5 variations from the Hot Cross Bun Theme.
This piano piece, 5 Variations of Hot Cross Bun, is inspired by Mozart’s “Ah! vous dirai-je, maman” (known in English as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star).
I have always admired how Mozart could take a simple children’s tune and, through various variations, turn them each into something both profound pieces while still preserving the simple theme of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
In the same way, I chose Hot Cross Bun. Hot Cross Bun is a beginner’s piece as it melody is made up of only three notes. This is often the first song I teach complete piano beginners. Using this 3 note melody, I turned it into 5 variations, plus a theme and coda in this 5 Variations of Hot Cross Bun.
I have written this piece for intermediate players (Grade 4 and above). Some of the variations, especially Variation 5 are intended to be more challenging.
